Definitions
These are plain-language descriptions of the outcome and sentencing categories used across this site. Each category groups together records that share a common result, so the figures elsewhere on the site can be read consistently.
Outcome categories
Dismissed
- The court dismissed the charge, ending the case on that charge without a conviction.
Withdrawn
- The prosecution withdrew the charge before a verdict or plea, ending the case on that charge.
Guilty plea
- The defendant entered a plea of guilty or no contest, resulting in a conviction on the charge.
Guilty verdict
- A judge or jury found the defendant guilty after a trial, resulting in a conviction on the charge.
Acquittal
- A judge or jury found the defendant not guilty after a trial.
ARD
- The charge was handled through Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition, a Pennsylvania pretrial program that can end in dismissal when its requirements are completed.
Diversion
- The charge was handled through a diversion program other than ARD, in which the defendant completes program requirements instead of proceeding to trial or sentencing.
Other
- The recorded disposition does not fit any of the defined outcome categories.
Sentencing categories
Probation
- The sentence includes a period of supervision in the community under conditions set by the court.
Incarceration
- The sentence includes confinement in a jail or prison.
Fine
- The sentence includes a monetary fine payable to the court.
Restitution
- The sentence includes payment intended to compensate for losses caused by the offense.
Community service
- The sentence includes a required amount of unpaid work performed in the community.
No further penalty
- The court recorded a determination of guilt without imposing any additional penalty.
Costs and fees
- The sentence includes payment of court costs or administrative fees.
Other
- The recorded sentencing component does not fit any of the defined sentencing categories.
